YOGA

THE 3 MINUTE READ

IS YOGA YOUR NEXT THING?

I’ve always been really intimidated by yoga.  For me, it came down to 3 words.  “I’m not flexible.”  Okay, 4 words.  “I’m REALLY not flexible.”  When I was in school, I failed the flexibility test every year in P.E.  I’ve never been able to touch my toes.  So when I chose yoga as my first ever THING, my lack of flexibility was my biggest concern.

It took me exactly one day to realize flexibility has nothing to do with enjoying yoga.  So if that is your concern as well, trust me.  You can do this THING.

One other thing.  If you’re thinking, “Yoga sounds fine but I swear if I have to say the word namaste or learn what a chakra is I’m out,” I promise I’ve got you taken care of.

MY EXPERIENCE

As with every THING on this site, I’ve done yoga as one of my THINGS.  In fact, it was my first ever THING in January of 2020.  Once I started, I quickly went from a yoga doubter to looking forward to it every day - sometimes even doing it twice per day.  It’s really amazing how these THINGS can take you by surprise and become your next obsession.

After a month was over and I moved onto my next THING, I was still into yoga.  I’ve continued to do it at least a couple of times a week for the past 6 months and I can happily report that I can touch my toes for the first time in my life.  Even more importantly, I feel as physically and mentally strong as I ever have and I directly attribute those both, in part, to yoga.

WHAT WILL IT COST?

On day 1 of this THING I didn’t own a yoga mat.  In fact, I didn’t get one until about day 10.  I don’t necessarily recommend this, but you can really do this entire THING for free if you want to.  Do yoga in your bedroom, living room, backyard, or wherever you have space until you get a mat.  I will help you find a yoga mat without spending a crazy amount of money (I got mine for $15).  At the end of the day, this THING has a low cost of entry.

"Yoga guarantees wellness as well as fitness. Yoga is not merely an exercise but a way to attain peace through physical, mental and spiritual well-being."

-Narendra Modi, Indian Prime Minister

"It’s just me, a jug of water, and the yoga mat… and a bunch of old ladies that are kicking my ass.”

-Joe Rogan

Access to the yoga inspiration page.

The inspiration page is the only place you need to visit to find all of the videos, books, podcasts, websites, and more to stay motivated on days when you are struggling to get on the mat.  I collected these resources throughout my month of yoga and beyond, and still use them frequently to find inspiration.
